Many know the life of Abraham Lincoln and his after he became President, but many know little about him before then. This site discusses the life of Lincoln from when he was born in Kentucky through his career as a lawyer & attorney.
Lincoln was born in Hodgenville Kentucky in 1809 which is located immediately southeast of Elizabethtown KY in Hardin County. Lincoln was reared in Kentucky and became a prominent citizen for the area around Etown in Hardin County KY and became the owner of several farms in the area. At the age of 23 in 1832 Lincoln became interested in politics and pushed his candidacy to become a part of the Illinois General Assembly. He then went on to become a postmaster. It was then that Lincoln’s efforts turned towards law. He took it upon himself to become a lawyer and started his education by reading several books including Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England among numerous others. It was in 1837 that Lincoln became admitted to the bar and became an attorney. Lincoln developed an impressive reputation as a capable attorney for several years and eventually joined a law practice with William Herndon. Lincoln’s record as an attorney became quite prominent. Lincoln then became interested in politics and turned his attention a bit away from law and his duties as a lawyer. It was then that he became a member of the Illinois House of Representatives in which he served 4 successive terms. This interest politics continue to grow and eventually led Lincoln to the White House and President of the United States.
Lincoln’s perseverance and fortitude allowed him go from being a farmer in rural Kentucky in the Elizabethtown KY and Hardin County areas, all the way to the White House and becoming one of the most well known and beloved persons in history. It was with fond recognition and appreciation for Lincoln’s efforts that we salute him for his sacrifices and impact on United States history.
